Bridge Over the River Kwai (Or Death Railway Trip)
The Kwai River Bridge was made famous by the 1960s movie about a bamboo bridge being built by British Soldiers in Burma during World War II. This movie was mostly fiction, the bridge is of concrete/metal construction and it is actually located in Thailand. Thailand Tourism authority offers a great service of train tours. These are low cost trips that you can take that range from day trips to long weekends to various scenic parts of Thailand. Most of the trips begin and end in the Hua Laphong Rail Station, the main rail hub for passengers for the entire country. Pictures of this station are shown above. The station is clean and organized, but beware, it is also VERY busy. As a side note: Thailand uses their rail and bus system as their major artery moving people and products throughout their borders.
The tour that I choose was a day trip that took me almost to the Thai border with Myanmar, ending in the Soiyak Water Falls but making stops in Phra Pathom Chedi, Bridge over the Rive Kwai, the "Death Railway", and the Kanchanabury WWII Cemetery. I will describe each of these stops in detail below. The trip was a full day, starting at 7 am and not returning to Hua Laphong Station until after dark, around 7 pm. The train was un-air-conditioned but was comfortable, at least while we were moving.
Phra Pathom Chedi
Our first stop was at the temple called Phra Pathom Chedi , The Temple main feature was a huge pagoda (see the pictures below. The stop was just long enough to walk from the train station to the Temple without too much rush. To get to the temple we walk through a city market area where you can get anything from a quick snack to a glass of ice coffee.
Bridge over the River Kwai and the "Death Railway
The Bridge was made famous by a 1960's film of the same name. The film, however was in fact fiction based loosely on the events surrounding this bridge. I will not go into detail of the differences between the film and this bridge but will let that up to you. Briefly, the bridge is located in Thailand, not Burma but many people (mostly British soldiers) did give their lives building this bridge for the Japanese during World War II. This is why this railway is known as the "Death Railway" in Thailand. The rail line leading from the Kwai River Bridge to the Soiyak Water Falls appears treacherous but is well maintained and safe for travel. The railway follows the river and often has sheer cliffs overlooking the river and can be quite scenic. However, these conditions lead to many deaths during WWII.
Kanchanaburi WWII Cemetery
The WWII Cemetery in Kanchanaburi is filled with the bodies of the people who gave their lives constructing the Kwai Bridge for the Japanese Army. This stop is quite sobering knowing these men gave their lives building the rail line that was we were just on.
Soiyak Water Falls
The Soiyak Water Fall is the final stop of this trip and it is quite refreshing. The waterfall is augmented in areas with concrete and being an geologist is could tell immediately that it wasn't natural. The industrious Thai People have taken and natural water supply and made is a tourist stop. The surrounding area is a natural area and protected from development, which is good. There are hiking trails leading to the water falls source; a small stream filled with small fish and is icy cold. Also along the trail is a few caves to explore. The Thai People find these areas sacred, as evidenced by the presence of sacred images located in the caves. The trail are quite interesting, having many native plants and animals to observe along the way.
At the very end of the Railway sits an historic train, once used by the Japanese during the construction of the railway. The plaque commemorating the train and the people who died in its construction gave the trip some meaning for me.
We returned to the Hua Laphong Rail Station rather late and I was quite tired, but the trip was worthwhile and I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in learning some about historical Thailand.

Laser Disc - The Evolution of Karaoke, Part 1
I have been selling Karaoke products for nearly 25 years, which tells you at least two things; one, that I'm not a spring chicken (if you do the math, I have to be at least 45 years old because who starts selling Karaoke when they're 13?) and two, I've seen a lot of changes in the karaoke market, especially when it comes to the machines that are available.
When I first started selling karaoke in the 1980's there were basically four major companies involved with the production of American karaoke machines and software. They were Pioneer, Sony, BMB/Nikkodo, and Megastar. Soon to follow were most of the major electronics companies, companies like Panasonic, JVC, RCA, Yamaha, Sanyo, among others. But the biggie of all these companies, as far as karaoke was involved, was Pioneer. Pioneer initially started with their Laser Disc line, offering both the hardware and a very successful software line. Pioneer released less than 100 Professional 28 Song English Karaoke Laser Discs between 1986 to 1994, and each Laser Disc sold for upwards of $150. Although 100 discs did not seem like a lot, on top of these Laser Karaoke Discs, there were thousands of movies, concerts, vintage TV shows, and other video programs being produced by Pioneer. Then other companies began their production of Laser Discs, not only in the karaoke field, but in all aspects of the video industry. The quality of the Laser Disc was far superior to the then prevalent VHS and Betamax formats, it even initially proved better than DVD, both in audio and in video quality. Oh, the future of Laser Disc looked bright. Here was a format that could bring the old movies and t.v. programs back to life, to a realism never before possible. However, in time, trouble started to develop for Pioneer and eventually the entire Laser Disc industry.
First of all, the Laser Disc proved too costly for the American Consumer. On a karaoke disc, 28 songs was about the most that could be programmed onto the disc, 14 per side. At $150 per disc, the cost per song was over $5 each track. If that was the only karaoke available, which it was for a short while, then people would pay that because there was no other option. However CD+G karaoke soon was introduced and 18 tracks sold for around $40, the cost per song being less than half of what it was on Laser Disc. Pioneer, and other developers of Laser Disc Karaoke, were probably banking on the fact that the quality of the music was superior on the Laser Disc and also that CD+G Karaoke did not display any moving video, just the lyrics of the songs for the most part.
That brings us to our second problem with Laser Disc Karaoke. Karaoke started in Japan and soon was very popular in the entire Far East. Almost all the karaoke software available in these places - China, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, etc. would display a moving video along with the lyrics to the songs. CD+G karaoke has never been popular in these places, since there was no accompanying video to the lyrics of the songs. However the American Public did not take to the video portion of the karaoke tracks. Although Pioneer did a pretty decent job at shooting videos with good looking actors, some sort of storyline, or exotic scenes, most people in the U.S.A. considered the video portion of the karaoke song to be a distraction. That meant that Pioneer was spending more money on developing karaoke tracks for a feature that most would rather choose not to see. Other companies also added to the disdain of Laser Karaoke by producing cheap videos with poor lighting, ugly actors, and videos that had no apparent connecting storyline to the theme of the song. So, basically the feature that was supposed to make Laser Disc Karaoke stand apart from CD+G Karaoke and be it's big selling point, the moving video, in the end proved to be a contributing factor to it's demise.
Another contributing factor to the extinction of Laser Karaoke was the size of the discs. Each professional 28 Song Laser Disc was 12 inches round, the same size as a 33 RPM record. However it was heavier than a record. When professionals in the business had to haul around 100 or more of these discs, the temptation to switch to a lighter, easier, more accessible format, the CD+G, proved too great. Pioneer tried to combat this problem by offering a smaller, lighter 8" Laser Disc. This solution only created another problem. The smaller Laser Disc only had about 8 songs, that's all that could be programmed onto them. That meant that to have the same amount of songs to offer, a KJ would not have to haul around 500 or more of these discs.
Although a Laser Disc was quite large in size, the amount of information that could be stored on it was quite limited, about 60 minutes per side. With karaoke songs, this did not initially prove to be a problem, as songs are only 3 to 5 minutes long. However when watching movies, this became a problem. Right in the middle of the movie, possibly in the middle of a dramatic scene, the Laser Disc would need to be flipped over. Laser Disc machines would later be developed that flipped the disc automatically at the end of playback of side A over to side B. This still proved to be a problem when viewing movies or programs that had a running time of over 2 hours, since the rest of the program would have to be stored on a second disc, requiring the manual removal of the first disc and insertion of the second disc. In an American society that doesn't want to get up from the couch once the movie starts, this limitation proved to be too great. Since Laser Disc did not catch on and the American consumer, for the most part, did not switch their VCRs to Laser Disc players, Pioneer could not support the format for just Karaoke enthusiasts. They pulled the plug on their Laser Karaoke line in the mid-1990's, converting many of their Karaoke Music tracks over to the CD+G or DVD format. The 'writing was on the wall' when Pioneer, the great Proponent of Laser Karaoke, introduced a CD+G Karaoke machine without Laser Disc capability. Laser Disc Karaoke was definitely on it's way out.
Many of you who have been singing for some time may have gone the route of Laser Karaoke and some of you may still have a Laser Karaoke player that you pull out for family get-togethers or every once in a blue moon. Well I've got good news and bad news for those of you that are still clinging on to these old karaoke dinosaurs. The bad news is that if you want to sing any music from this century you will need to buy your karaoke on the cd+g format. Some of you may have a combo Laser Disc/CD+G player, so that will not be a problem. If you do not have one of these, there are many inexpensive karaoke players available. Which brings me to the good news. Karaoke hardware and software is getting more and more affordable. On the software side - some companies that still have an old stock of Laser Discs will offer these at a substantial discount. I know of one company that offers brand new Karaoke Laser Discs for as low as $8.00 each. Karaoke CD+G's are often priced in the $10.00 range. New digital formats offer songs for a cost as low as 10 cents a song, a far cry from the $5.00 a song that was once the norm for Laser Disc Karaoke. As far as hardware goes - machines are priced well below $100.00, many of them with features that include MP3+G playback and even some that have MP3+G recording. The evolution of karaoke may have seen the extinction of the Laser Karaoke format but what now has replaced it more than compensates for the loss. Karaoke machines and discs are now more affordable than ever and available to anyone who wants to sing.
Rest in peace, Laser Disc Karaoke. You started us off on the course of bringing quality karaoke tracks right into the comfort of our own homes, but, alas, your time here on earth was short. Now you can only be found in attics, garage sales, and second hand stores, next to Pet Rocks and 8-Track Machines. We will miss you and forever be grateful for your contribution to the karaoke world.

Using Your iPad on an Airplane With "Airplane Mode"
If you have ever flown on an airline, you will notice that during take off, and before landing, the flight attendant will ask that your turn off all your electronic devices such as your phone. This is done to protect sensitive airline electronics and prevent interference with flight navigation and communication systems. As a safety measure, this is the best way to guarantee that all devices that emit wireless signals are safely turned off. The iPad is more than just a wireless device as it allows users to watch movies, listen to music, play games, read books, and much more. And all this can be done without the use of the WIFI, cellular 3G, or Bluetooth antennas.
When flying on an airplane, you can put your iPad into a special mode called "Airplane Mode." This automatically turns off the transceivers for your iPad's WIFI, Bluetooth, and cellular 3G.
To place your iPad on Airplane mode, please follow the very simple steps below to turn off your WIFI, 3G, and Bluetooth transceivers:
Step 1: You need to go to the Settings Screens. Touch the "Home" button if you are not on the home screen. Then touch "Settings."
Step 2: Touch the Airplane Mode On/Off switch to turn on this setting. Within a second, your iPad will disconnect and power down your cellular 3G network, Bluetooth, and WIFI network.
Notes: On your status bar where the signal strength and network icons are normally, you will see an Airplane icon when the Airplane mode is activated.

Koh Phi Phi Paradise Lost!
If you want to keep secretes, kill everybody who knows. The same could be said if you want to ruin a good thing tell somebody about it. If you want the whole world to know feature it in a movie. The islands of the Koh Phi Phi island group in southern Thailand were featured in the movie The Beach. If you are not familiar with the story line, some young travelers discover this fantastic spot in Thailand and decide to make their version of utopia and keep it secrete at all costs, had they been successful this would still be a small island group that few but the most hardy backpackers would visit.
When the movie The Beach was made here there were not many that knew about this beautiful island group of Stonehenge like monoliths that stick out of the pond like waters of the Andaman Sea. Clad in deep jungle greenery they have a forbidding yet enticing aura about them. The white sand beaches look like everyone's picture of tropical paradise with palm trees thick at the top with green pods of coconuts waiting to drop their sweet milk for thirsty travelers.
Today the thirsty travelers come in the form of herds of young backpackers which jam the center of the dog bone shaped main island at night milling in streams propelled by the ever present urban thump. By day these hordes descend on the beaches and lay in clumps of self basting & baking kids. Bars, stores, coffee shops, travel agents, discos even a very popular 7-11 feed the needs of these adventure seekers many of whom sport bandages and crutches from spills and thrills of rock climbing, cliff jumping and jungle expeditions to find water falls.
The waters around Koh Phi Phi are not safe not because of the animals in the water but because of the poor water treatment Streptococcus a particular nasty skin eating bug is around and other ailments as well so it pays to take care of even the smallest scratches here so that you don't end up in the emergency room having pieces of skin cut out.
The other thing to watch out for is your wallet as they are firm believers in price fixing from internet to scuba diving they have some of the highest prices in Thailand and they do not negotiate at all if you are a bargain seeker give this place a wide berth. Cheap hotels in every sense of the term are priced like 3 star hotels else where we did not see any places that delivered value to price with the exceptions of The Phi Phi Hotel which was quoting off season rates seemed to be the only hotel that had a clue.
In the period before the islands here became famous this was a great place to come and hang out for weeks at a time, today however it is another paradise lost.

History of Muay Thai
Muay Thai is a combat sport with origins set deep in the history of Thailand. Muay (boxing in Thai language) Thai is pronounced Thai Muay by native Thais. Muay Thai is a brutal and athletically demanding combat sport, with participants utilising fists, elbows, knees and legs as striking weapons to the opponent. Muay Thai is practiced extensively in Thailand, with international participation significantly growing over the past decade.
Thai boxing has a historical value which is appreciated by those who practice the sport. This history which forms the culture of Thai boxing has been developed over centuries of military and kingdom battle, religious influence, cultural meaning, social development and government support.
The initial origins of Thai boxing can be traced back 2000 years to the southern China tribes of Ao Lai who migrated south to the central plains of what is now the Kingdom of Thailand. Because all records of Siam history were destroyed by the Burmese in the Ayuddhaya period it is difficult for the precise origins to the written. Consequently the origins of Muay Thai have been verbally passed down through generations, with modern day Muay Thai combat warriors understanding the value of warrior established by those before them through a combination of explosive artful skill and respectful calmness.
It has been told that many great leaders of Thailand have demonstrated the warrior spirit which paved the way for the development of Muay Thai. In the 15th century King Naresuan the Great was known for his bravery against the Burmese. Pra Chao Suua, or the the Tiger King (1662 -1709), was an avid follower of Muay Thai. The Tiger King participated in Muay Thai bouts across all of Siam.
King Taskin the Great ruled from 1767 to 1784 and rose to fame from the ashes of Ayuddhaya, at the time the capital of Siam. The Burmese had overrun the city and destroyed all historical records of Siam. After an intense battle in which the Burmese conquered Ayuddhaya, King Taksin gathered 500 followers and escaped east towards what is now known as the Issan region of Thailand. King Taskin built a new army in this region with now legendary warrior Phraya Pichai Daab hak as his commander in chief. The name Daab hak means 'broken sword', a name he was given when he fought on with no sword after it broke in half during battle, using techniques now known as Muay Thai fighting. Phraya Pichai Daab hak led King Taskin to a glorious victory over the relentless Burmese.
Nai Khanom Tom is considered to be the most famous boxer in the history of Thai boxing. He was the first boxer to have fought in another country. After being imprisoned by the Burmese during war Nai Khanom Tom was challenged to fight against 10 of the best Burmese Bando boxers. He defeated all one after the other and was granted freedom back to Siam.
The form of boxing and combat in Thailand throughout these historic periods was known as Muay Boran, and was used as a significant form of military battle, therefore fight to the death. Muay Korat was a particular style of Muay Boran that was practiced in the now heartland of Muay Thai; the north-eastern region of Thailand, Issan. Muay Korat emphasis was placed on strength, with the Buffalo strike said to be so powerful that it could take down a Buffalo with a single strike.
Muay Boran eventually became a part of Siam society with events being staged at festivals and shows, whilst still being maintained as a form of military combat.
Legend has it that in these historic forms of Thai boxing warriors wore hemp bound hands dipped in resin or starch. In extreme battles hands were additionally covered in broken glass making it a fight to the death contest, as seen in the well known movie Kickboxer.
King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) reignited the practice of Muay Thai in Siam with his elevation to the throne in 1868. The art was transformed into a sport with participation taking place to aid in physical exercise, self-defense, recreation and personal advancement. Training camps were established all over the country to enable the practice to be maintained and developed. Very few modern camps carry the ethics and traditions of these original camps, an example of this is the act of consuming alcohol whilst being a member of a camp being strictly forbidden at any time. Unfortunately many modern camps have been established in tourism destinations which essentially go against the purpose of these secluded original training camps.
Modern Muay Thai is referred to as 'The Art of the Eight Limbs', and has been influenced by modern western boxing with the adoption of boxing gloves and a roped square ring which has its origins in western boxing.
An important part of the tradition of boxing in Thailand which still stands today in the practicing of the Wai Kru, a pre bout dance ritual which pays respect to the combatants trainer. Wai is a term used to bow the head in respect and derived from Buddhist tradition, and Kru meaning teacher. Muay Thai trainers are also termed as Aa-Jarn, however Kru is more appropriate.
Muay Thai has seen a modern re-emergence and worldwide growth with the realisation of its importance in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Many MMA fighters are making the trip to Thailand to learn Muay Thai as it is seen as an essential part of MMA, which is a testament to the true warrior and athletic values of Muay Thai.
The art of Muay Thai is not to be confused with modern Kickboxing. Many skills of Muay Thai which have been developed over centuries of tradition are not replicated in modern Kickboxing which is popular in the United States and in fitness programs globally. However Muay Thai offers a superior form of battle, athletic conditioning and fitness training due to its technical requirements in the utilisation of eight striking points.

Visit New York City Movie Locations
New York City has seen many T.V. shows and movies filmed on locations throughout the Big Apple. Friends, Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Gossip Girls are just the beginning of a long list of New York T.V. shows. Spiderman, Ghostbusters, Home Alone 2, Coyote Ugly, and tons more add to the list of movies that saw Big Apple production time. How does one go about finding these locations?
There is a company, appropriately named Tour New York TV and Movie Sites. The company provides around three hour tours of various movies and T.V. show filming locations. They take you by some in a luxury coach and stop at certain locations so that you can have a bite where the Friends Show (perhaps) did, or sit at the Huxtabul house's steps. They provide for a wonderful tour that points out many locations for several shows.
Central park saw its share of production time also. A plethora of movies has been filmed in the park and it goes on to this very day. On the Central Park tour, you will enjoy a stroll through the park. You will see the band shell of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Kramer vs. Kramer", take photos at "Tavern on the Green" that was used when filming "Ghostbusters", feed pigeons where McCaulay Culkin did on "Home Alone 2". Then take a water break at Serendipity Fountain from "Ransom" and "One Fine Day", and stop at Wollman Rink, which saw airtime in "Love Story" and "Serendipity", to name just a few locations.
Some of the T.V. shows have there own tour. Sex and the City is one of those shows. You will visit Jimmy Choo's boutique, the Soho gallery where Charlotte worked, and even a bar used by the cast during filming. Memorable moments from the show will be revisited as you see where Samantha met the friar or have a cupcake where Miranda stuffed cupcakes into her mouth.
I could speak of many more locations. Over 60 movie locations and 40 television show locations are part of these tours. These are all real places where memorable films were made. Some are true classics and others will be. It is the history of the Big Apple; the legacy of New York City is as a costar often with the world biggest, best, and funniest actors and actresses of our time. Visit the locations on your next New York visit; complete that memorable vacation by being able to look at a movie and say, "I've been there."

Thailand Private Investigators Have A Tough Job
Thailand private investigators offer some of the best services in the field of private investigation. They have a good network of connections and private investigators offering the best of services. Private investigation has become an important part of Thailand pre nuptial background checks. The high incidence of prostitution which exists today makes it an indispensable tool. Besides this private investigators also have become more sophisticated in their methodology of collection of details.
Thailand private investigators today are also involved in locating lost persons and people who have been kidnapped. The usage of global positioning reconnaissance systems as an important detection tool shows the level of investigation the private investigation methodology has undergone. Earlier one was given an idea that private investigating agencies worked in dark, dusty and murky surroundings. This impression was given by the characters in movies. However, in real life private investigators are known to use extensively the electronic gadgets to get proof of whatever they might be investigating.
Thailand private investigators are known to use debugging equipment to get proof both in form of audio and video. Today the level of technological development achieved by the debugging equipment manufacturers have allowed in private investigators to setup their audio and video surveillance without the subject ever getting to know of its existence. These equipments have become more sophisticated and small enough.
Thailand private investigators are known to use polygraph testing in order to get details either in the case of employees screening or even prenuptial cases. Polygraph testing however is not fully legal and can be refused by the subject if it is found to be disclosing unnecessary details. Besides this private investigators are also known to use surveillance of the subject in question. This service is normally used by insurance companies to detect fraud or fake claims. Surveillance is done on the subject to understand if any of the submissions made are found to be illegal or fake. Surveillance is done in prenuptial investigations to see if either of the bride or groom have illegal and extraneous relationships. In a place like Thailand where prostitution is a big business it is but natural to screen the background of the spouse to be. This is done in order to avoid unnecessary skirmishes later on in their marital life, owing to the extramarital relationship that might affect their relationship.
Thailand private investigators also do secret operations on behest of their clients to expose patent and trademark violations. This is an important field of investigation which finds more relevance in the modern world where patents are the only method of protecting an invention or discovery. They are also known to conduct internet and information technology investigations. This is done in order to avoid spying on commercial interests of a company and even abuse through internet or emails. They are also used to study breaches that have happened in the electronic security system followed for online transactions.

Cape San Blas, Florida - Choose the "Forgotten Coast" For a Relaxing Beach Vacation
Cape San Blas, Florida, is one of the few remaining unspoiled gems that shines brightly on the necklace of beaches that run along the coastline of Florida. Unlike her more developed sister beaches in Panama City, Destin, and other Panhandle locations, the Cape is often called "The Forgotten Coast," because while all the growth was taking place in other beach communities, the Cape was staying pristine and largely unchanged. A dog-legged shaped peninsula, Cape San Blas extends out from the mainland in the area of Port St. Joe, Florida, a tiny community where the Florida constitution was written.
As you leave the mainland, the first section of the Cape runs east and west. As you pass the historical Cape San Blas Lighthouse area and a spot known as Stump Hole, the landmass makes a turn, and the remaining 15 or so miles run north-south. This portion of the Cape is also sometimes known as St. Joseph Spit. At the northern end of the Cape is the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, which includes over 2,500 acres of beautiful unspoiled beaches, majestic dunes, and wilderness. At the very tip of the Cape is a popular spot for people to go by boat for family outings of shelling and picnics.
As a Florida native, I'm picky about my beaches. That's why I had a "wait and see" attitude when my husband planned our first family vacation to the Cape San Blas area in 1997. As a Sarasota County native, for some reason I had never heard of Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe, or Gulf County -- that "Forgotten Coast" moniker again. When we arrived, however, I was instantly in love with the area and knew I would come back again and again. And that is exactly what we have done. My children have grown up spending summers on the Cape and we spend as much time there as we can.
Why is the Cape so special? Once you drive into Port St. Joe, you leave behind the hustle and bustle that is so much a part of Florida today. On the peninsula there are many things you won't find: No high-rise buildings, no massive condominium complexes, no towering hotels, no malls, no movie theaters, no traffic, no noise and no crowds! What you will find are beautiful beaches, gorgeous sunsets, pristine St. Joe Bay, the fabulous waters of the Gulf of Mexico, pelicans, dolphin, shelling and much more.
What is there to do? On the Cape, reconnecting with your family and nature are number-one activities. You may want to just spend a week kicking back on the beach, reading books, fishing from the beach, getting a tan, collecting shells or playing horseshoes. Lots of families do just that, and they say even kids find the Cape a great place to unwind and relax.
More the active type?
