Bangkok Hotels in Silom District - Where to Stay

The district of Silom is where you'll find Bangkok's commercial business district with many international businesses sharing space with major Thai owned corporations. By day it's an area bustling with salary men and women rushing to work. By night Silom warps into the seediest sex district on this side of Bangkok. It's no wonder why millions of visitors from all over the world choose to book a hotel in the district of Silom.

The major hub of this venerable red light district is Patpong 1. Every evening beginning at 7pm the streets of Patpong 1 is closed off to vehicle traffic as armies of street vendors start setting up shop. This is known as Patpong Night Market and it's the place to find knock off name brand wallets and anything that could be faked and copied especially pirated DVD movies. You'll often find families, older folks and older teens wandering through the stalls of the night market right next to men and women enjoying their night at a popular bar.

Patpong 1 is situated between two major streets, Surawongse road and Silom road. Staying in a hotel between these two roads near Patpong 1 will position you strategically to many sights and attractions in the area as well as the best restaurants and clubs.

One of the best hotels in Patpong is the massive Montien Hotel on Surawongse road. It's one of the classiest hotels in the area with rooms with a large balcony to enjoy the sights of the city below. Right across from the Montien Hotel is the smaller yet cozy Siam Heritage Boutique Hotel with its stylishly Thai designed inspired rooms.

There are a few other notable hotels just a bit further down from Silom road such as the Narai Hotel, a hugely popular hotel often filled with tour groups. And if you're traveling with 8 friends and looking for budget accommodations then look no further at Lub d Bangkok Hostel.

But staying in a nice hotel is not enough. The hotels I here mentioned are near BTS stations where you can catch the Sky Train to other parts of the major commercial zones in Bangkok. The Sky Train is an elevated two way system that runs above the major parts of Silom with several entrances along that stretch of road. Then there's the MRT, an underground train system that will also take you to other interesting parts of Bangkok as well.

The district of Silom in Bangkok has something for everyone. There are clusters of bars for gays and go go bars for men and loads of great shopping opportunities for anyone. The pub scene is quite an attraction as well with live music playing to large crowds. Booking a hotel in Silom is a great choice as there's just so much to see and do in such a tiny space in the great big city of Bangkok.

Holiday Homework: 4 Ways To Keep Your Students Engaged During Winter Vacation

Winter Break is a time for fun, family and friends. It's also a time when assigning homework can be difficult, as you don't want to burden students during their vacation, but you also need them to continue studying the lessons you're teaching in class. How can you assign homework that is both educational and won't detract from student's family time? Read on!

1) Family History: Some students only see their extended family during the holidays. Researching a family history is a great way for students to interact, and to learn more, about their family during this special time. Assign students to pick a family member and interview them. They can ask questions about the person's life, another family member, important historical events, or about an event that happened within the family. Have students present their findings as a mini-biography. They should write-up (and, for advanced students, analyze for historical context) the interview. Give them creative license to present their findings. Let them draw, animate, film or paint their biography, or allow them to write it as a song, poem, comic book, one-act play or short story. The more personal and creative it is, the more the family will treasure this historical snapshot.

2) Now and Then - Metacognitive Thinking: Winter vacation is a great time for students to reflect on the scholastic year. Ask students to complete an ungraded survey or to answer questions that engage in metacognitive thinking. Define "metacognitive" and ask them to tell you what they have learned this year, what things they still don't understand, and what they want to learn about in the coming new year. Ask students to anonymously tell you about anything in class that has confused, worried, or stressed them out; when you find out what these things are, you can adjust your teaching style and curriculum to help alleviate any problems. Ask them their favorite and least favorite parts of class, what they want to learn about, what they dislike learning about. You can add a fun twist to the assignment by having students write their favorite (school-appropriate) joke, and share one every week with the class in the new year.

3) Book Reports: A classic for a reason, assigning a book report is a great way to engage students over their lengthy Winter Break. Rather than assign one book to the entire class, provide a list of appropriate books and let each student select their own. Make sure to give them this project with enough time to check out the book from the library. As students read their books, they can complete a worksheet to help them retain and expand their ideas for an actual written report. And this isn't just an assignment for ELA classes-social studies teachers can assign works of historical fiction to really bring the curriculum to life.

4) Family Movie Night: One surefire way to get families involved with homework is to assign a movie to watch. Make a list of films that students can select from. You can create the list based on what you're learning about in class or what you will be learning about when students return from Winter Break. Have students watch the film with their family, and give them a worksheet to complete as they watch the movie. Tell students that sharing is okay for this assignment, and encourage them to work with their family members to come up with the best answers for the questions.

Giving homework that is entertaining, interacting and engaging will make sure students don't miss out on important family time over the holidays!

Krabi Island Hopping - Which Islands You Must Definitely Visit

Krabi has the best natural scenery in all of Thailand with its stunning coastline and offshore islands. It is easy to hire a speedboat or longtail boat to enjoy a day of exciting island hopping.

Krabi boasts 132 islands under its jurisdiction and the large majority of these islands are deserted. Ao Nang beach in Krabi is a spring board to islands hopping tours. You can buy longtail boat tickets at Ao Nang beach for your island hopping tours.

The 'Four Islands' tour

The Four Island Tour consist of trips to local islands namely Chicken island, Poda island and Tub island. These islands makes picture perfect memories. You will also see the beautiful Phra Nang Bay on Railay peninsula. This beach is inaccessible by road as it is surrounded by limestone cliffs. Phra Nang Bay is considered to be one of the most beautiful beach in the world.

Hong Island

This is a five-island Hong Island tour, which visits four beautiful islands in a pristine part of the Tharnbok Khoranee National Marine Park. 'Hong' in Thai which translates to room in English. This "island of rooms" is a perfect escape away from Krabi mainland. There is also a slightly enclosed lagoon in the middle of Hong island which is tranquil and has turquoise water. Hong island is truly a desert island paradise renowned for its breath-taking beauty, shallow coral reefs and fine sandy beaches.

Phi Phi Islands

It is highly recommended to take one full day trip to the Phi Phi Islands from Ao Nang beach. Phi Phi Islands consist of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley which form part of the Hat Noppharat Thara - Koh Phi Phi National Park and is considered 'the jewels of the Andaman Sea'.

Phi Phi Islands are located south west of Krabi, these breathtakingly beautiful islands exhibit lovely coral gardens and deep reefs, perfect for diving and snorkeling. Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay were shooting locations for Leonardo Dicaprio's film "The Beach" movie. The journey takes only forty five minutes by speedboat and one hour by longtail boat from Ao Nang beach.

Words does not fully describe the beauty of Phi Phi islands and Hong island lagoon.

In fact, many Western travelers find several countries in Asia as their haven and perfect places to relax their body from a whole year round of tiring activities. What we have here are top Asian destinations that you and your family will definitely love.

Thailand

The country of Thailand receives millions of tourist visits every year. Despite some troubles affecting its current government, visitors and travelers are not affected with it since all they want is to have a place to relax and enjoy a perfect holiday. Spots like Phuket and Bangkok are two of the most visited regions in Thailand that boast their rich and crystal clear beaches.

Indonesia

People most associate Indonesia with the devastating tsunami that hit the country and few of its neighbors in 2004. But honestly, Indonesia is more than what we think it is. The country prides hundreds of world renowned tourist destinations such as beaches, live museums, and magnificent scenic beauty.

The towering temples and grand pagodas in the country are among the most popular destinations in Indonesia that continue to receive millions of visitor each year. Travelers, historians, and other visitors never miss to take photographs of these places during their visit.

Adding to that heritage are the enticing beaches populating the country. Bali in particular is a world class destination where pristine beaches are abundant. Hollywood movie stars often spend their vacation here and many newly webs are also taking pleasure in the island.

Philippines

Dubbed as the Pearl of the Orient, Philippines dearly proved that glory by showcasing tons of tourist attractions present in the archipelago. The country is not just home to luxurious beach clubs such as those built in Boracay, but also to compassionate and loving citizens. The country is also a sanctuary of several endangered species as the spotted dear.

For tourists who love to go by the beach, the country can provide many places to spend a fabulous vacation. Aside from Aklan where the famous Boracay can be found, places like Negros, Panay, Apo, and Palawan are also good places to spend a beach holiday.

2011 Predictions

The New Year is just around the corner and 2011 predictions are bound to cause a stir. After decorating the Christmas tree and relaxing with a festive glass of eggnog flavored with our favorite spirit, we pondered the unbelievable events of 2010.

Even more implausible are our 2011 predictions during the "Year of the Rabbit..."

The seventy-one year old Bugs Bunny will be committed to the Wild Hare sanitarium after beheading Elmer Fudd. Staff members will constantly complain when Bugs sneaks up on them and mutters, "Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits."
Korea Airlines and Israeli airline El AL will merge into KAL EL (the Superman airlines). The Man of Steel is depicted "in flight" across the fuselages and all the stewardesses wear "Lois Lane" name cards, to ease confusion (according to EL AL security).
North Korea, not to be undone, will counter with its own airline. To become popularly known as "Lil Kim Airlines," the jet fleet will tout illustrations of Kim Jong-Il (dressed in a cape and sprouting his own wings) on the fuselages.
The Obama administration will announce the advent of a portable money printing machine (the PMPM-1000000) that will print one million dollar bills. The first unit is slated for installation in the White House, "Green Room." Studies have shown that the new machine will save the Treasury Department millions.
In an unprecedented move, the White House will create the Department of Information. Their first order of business will be to remove the term "Global Warning" from the English language and replace it with "Bad Weather."
The New York Yankees will offer President Obama a seven year twenty-one million dollar contract (to commence January 13, 2013). The "Bronzed Bomber's" job will be to improve the Yankee's tarnished image by having players "reach out to America" and tax citizen's willingness for change.
Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange will host "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). During hilarious skits the popular globetrotting hacker will reveal KFC's secret fried chicken recipe and the launch codes for the Strategic Air Command's missile defense system.
NBC, in desperate ratings quest, will announce that reality TV beauty Kim Kardashian will star as Scarlett O'Hara in a TV miniseries remake of "Gone With The Wind," co-starring Pierce Brosnan as Rhett Butler. A surprise addition to the cast is Lady Gaga to play the Atlanta Madam, Belle Watling.
In a shocking announcement, TV network news media pundits (Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Bill O'Reilly, et al.) will admit that their news programs are "just entertainment" at a national media town hall meeting. Their retort to audience catcalls will be: "We thought you already knew."
Perhaps the most disturbing of the 2011 predictions will come from the medical community. The American Medical Association (AMA) will make a major announcement that will send shock waves around the world. 3-D, the motion picture rage, will be found to have caused the visual impairment known as strabismus (cross-eyes) in over a million movie goers worldwide!
Members of the scientific community will present irrefutable proof that UFO's do exist during Geraldo Rivera's "Search for UFOs" Fox Special. Unfortunately, the spectacular will be pre-empted by breaking news-the birth of (future Scarlett O'Hara) Kim Kardashian's offspring.
In late 2011, China will make the startling announcement that it has taken over the continent of Africa (renamed Chinafrica). Beijing announces that where applicable, Chinese restaurants in third world countries will serve as embassies until proper structures are constructed.

Admittedly, these 2011 predictions are off the current radar screens. That is precisely why they will be so earth-shaking when revealed during the coming year. It should be noted that attempts were made to contact international psychics on the level of Edgar Cayce, Betty White, and Nostradamus, but their lack of response only solidified the importance of our 2011 predictions (why would they respond to predictions that are bound to overshadow their own?).

Muay Thai Boxing: An Ancient Sport

Muay Thai boxing is a sport that has been around for thousands of years, and is still practiced today as a professional sport as well as a hobby. It is the national sport of Thailand, and is practiced by millions of Thai men. It is often compared to Thailand in the way that soccer is compared to Ecuador, or hockey to Canada.

If you've ever watched a match on television, you know that it is an extremely brutal sport. If you're interested in martial arts at all, it is important to become familiar with Muay Thai, since it is a very popular form. Here are some of the basics of the sport.

A Muay Thai match focuses as much on ceremony as it does on beating the spit out of the opponent. Before each match, the two fighters do their opening rituals, which usually reflect the training of their masters, or the schools at which they learned their fighting technique.

Since Muay Thai is often a deeply religious sport, some of the fighers will pray by themselves or with their coaches before getting started, in an effort to increase their ability. Next is the Wai Kru ritual, in which the fighters circle each other around the ring, which signifies sealing it off for the fight.

Muay Thai focuses on 8 parts of the body that act as striking points. These are the hands, shins, elbows and knees. Most martial arts use fists and feet primarily, so this alone sets Muay Thai apart. You often see the fighters grapple immediately, locking their heads with each other. Then, they trade blows with their knees, striking each other in the stomach and chest. Sometimes they will trade blows for the entire match, leaving their chests bloody and tender, beaten to a pulp.

Besides keeping the entire Thai world captivated with matches and tournaments, Muay boxing has also provided a good deal of entertainment for the western world. Many matches are broadcasted on channels in the USA, and the movies Ong Bak and The Protector have brought about even more heightened interest in the sport, with the Muay Thai master Tony Jaa.

Like most martial arts, you can find training almost anywhere. But if you want to truly learn the sport and become the next great Muay Thai fighter, you might need to go to Thailand and find an authentic trainer to teach you the fine art!

Lady-boys in Phuket, Thailand

If you come to Phuket, your itinerary will surely include the famous side shows by those Katoey's or lady-boys. Be ready for a rich sensory experience and a time of enjoyment as they go all out to please the weary customers and patrons or tourists. It is not just about making a living, it is about a way of life. It is not a sleazy existence but a means of maintaining a lifestyle as a lady-boy they would not be able to in their own native village. They wear very revealing dresses showing their ample silicone emphasized breasts while they sing and dance in their performances. Their perfect measurements and their beauty makes them the envy of many real women.

The men and the women watch transfixed as they go about their routines. In Malaysia, they are known as Maknyah's or the derogatory term 'pondan' or 'she-males' in the West.

It is sometimes difficult to discern who is real or who isn't. Some of them are indeed beautiful. I believe God in his immense mercy is giving them a chance to live a life they should have been given since birth. They are obviously more ladies than men. Transsexuals or trans-gender are those who think they are a woman born in a man's body, while a transvestite is a man who likes to dress up like a woman.

In Thailand, being a lady-boy is less derogatory for example than in the west. They are accepted by society as the third sex and are not openly discriminated against. Many Thais have a slight stature, sport smaller bodies like a woman and quite hairless. Boobs are easier to fix but a sex change operation is more complicated, and expensive. My heart really goes out for them as they undergo it to reach their quest of being a real woman. Injection of female Hormones are also part of the routine they have to undergo.

One of the country's most famous lady-boys is Nong Toom, who went from champion Thai kick boxer to being a transsexual. A movie, Saitree Lex, was made about the true story of a lady-boy volleyball team known as the 'Iron Ladies' won the national championships in 1996 against the odds.

Getting ESL Students to Use Their English Outside of Class

Every time I begin a new class, I give my students a hand-out sheet with ideas to help improve their English outside of class. Most ESL students unfortunately seem to think their English is for use only within the class. As soon as they leave, they switch back to their own language and generally forget about English until it is time to come back to class. Of course they are more comfortable in their own language but they need to remember to try to practice at every opportunity. I teach in Thailand so there are relevant references in the following text.

How to help yourself to learn English

1. MAKE ENGLISH A PART OF YOUR DAY - EVERYDAY!

2. Don't leave English in the classroom. Take it with you when you leave.

3. Listen to English songs. You can buy English songbooks to find the words.

4. Listen to English Radio and watch English TV or movies

NOTE: Your brain likes to learn in little pieces so DVDs are best. You can watch or listen to about 10 minutes or so. Then play it again. Each time you listen, you should be learning a little more. It is all right to begin with Thai subtitles but as your English improves, you should try watching without the subtitles. You will listen closer and begin to understand more.

5. Read English magazines - Student Weekly, Nation Junior, or whatever subject interests you. Read a little at a time. It is important that you don't stop and look up words as you read. This breaks up the flow of your reading. Make a note of the words you don't understand. Underline them in pencil. Then first try to guess the meaning from the rest of the sentence or other sentences around them. If you cannot, when you finish what you are reading, then go to the dictionary and look up the words.

Reading is the best way to learn more English words, how grammar works, how sentences are formed and how we use the language. If you like to read, you will do much better in this course and in school generally. HELP YOURSELF TO BETTER GRADES - LEARN TO LOVE READING AS I DO. I ALWAYS HAVE A BOOK OR TWO ON THE GO!

6. Buy a good BIG English dictionary. It will give you lots of examples of how to pronounce and use words.

7. You can also go to dictionary.com> on the Internet.

8. Use Flashcards to improve your vocabulary. Put an English word on one side and the Thai translation on the other. Index cards cut into four are about the right size to carry in your pocket or purse. How many new words can you learn in one day? 5? 10? 20? Learning just five new words every day is about 150 words in a month or 1,800 new words in a year. With 1,800 new words, you will be able to communicate with almost anybody!

Review your new English words several times daily when you have a few moments - on the bus, waiting for someone, at lunch, e.g. As you learn new words, set aside those you know well but be sure to review all of the cards once a week.

9. Try to speak with someone in English whenever you can AND, try to speak, in English to Thais who can speak English well. There are many.

10. Start a daily journal where you can keep notes on what new words, phrases and idioms you learned that day. Practice your writing by writing in English about what you are doing or did that day. You should soon find that your English writing will be writing sentences longer, using more words and writing correctly.

I also post a big sign on the inside of the classroom door reminding students to take their English with them as they leave and 'Use it or lose it!"

You are welcome to adapt this hand-out for use in your own class.

Phuket Island - Popular Travel Destination in Thailand

Phuket has grown into one of the premier holiday destinations in South East Asia and is one of the busiest travel destinations of Thailand. It has replaced Bali as the most popular holiday island in the region.

What makes Phuket island such a great travel destination?

Phuket is first of all an inexpensive holiday destination. Phuket hotels, resorts and guesthouses can be found in all price categories and ratings and prices are considerably cheaper then what one would encounter in Europe or America.

Dining in restaurants or buying drinks in bars or clubs on Phuket is also less expensive then what most tourists are used to paying back in their home countries.

Phuket Beaches

The palm tree lined beaches of Phuket Island are of course world famous due to its crystal white sand and clear water of the Andaman Sea. Some of the nicest and most popular beaches found on Phuket Island are the beaches at Patong, Kamala, Karon, Kata and Nai Harn.

Phuket Nightlife

The Phuket nightlife is another reason why many tourists visit Phuket each year on holiday. Many tourists seem to keep coming back each year for especially the nightlife and bars of Phuket.

Most Phuket island nightlife venues can be found in Patong beach along the well known Soi Bangla. A number of large clubs are located along Bangla road in Patong including the very popular Tiger disco and the new Seduction Disco.

You can also find along Bangla road and the many small streets leading into Soi Bangla hundreds of beer bars. Each beer bar has a number of beautiful Thai ladies working for them who there to please the clients.

Phuket Shopping

Going shopping in Phuket in the past was not one of the most interesting activities for tourists due to the lack of a good variety of shops and products. Most of the shops sold the same tailor made clothing, bootleg movies and software and fake designer clothing.

Over the last few years however, a number of large shopping malls have opened on Phuket housing well known international retailers, unique local boutiques as well as international restaurant outlets such as Outback steakhouse and Burger King.

If you are going to visit Phuket for a holiday then please make sure to visit the brand new Phuket Junkceylon mall in Patong or the Central Carnival Mall along the Phuket by-pass road.

Thailand floods displace more than 100000

www.euronews.net A third of Thailand's provinces have been badly affected by flooding that has left 356 people dead. At an industrial estate in Pathum Thani, the collapse of flood barriers on Friday, meant the closure of 47 factories and damage costing nearly three quarters of a billion euros at that site alone. Meanwhile, the country's Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is urging all agencies to do what they can to protect the capital, Bangkok. Efforts are being made to divert water to the north of the city, then out to sea.

Dollywood Offers a New Polar Express Experience in 4D

The book was fantastic. The movie was a blockbuster in the truest sense of the word. Now, Dollywood, in conjunction with SimEx-Iwerks, is presenting The Polar Express 4D Experience. I'm sure you're familiar with 3D films with images that appear to leap off a movie screen as if they had three dimensions instead of one. That is one part of The Polar Express Experience. But there are little surprises along the way that give an entirely new dimension to the viewing.

Do you remember the book and the movie? Young children - questioning whether or not they believe in Santa - board The Polar Express which is bound for the North Pole. Is it real? Is it a dream? Is believing all that really counts?

Along the way, the kids, the conductor, a hobo and a host of other characters encounter plenty of adventure and excitement including dancing waiters, rumbling rail cars, falling snow, yummy treats to eat and more. In the end, every child discovers that, when they believe, magical things happen.

So, is The Polar Express Experience just another movie? Hardly! It's a 20-minute cinematic delight for kids and adults that brings a 4th dimension to the best-loved scenes of the original film. Presented in 3D, you actually feel as though you're part of the action as characters bound off the screen. This is not your father's 3D by any means. Gone are the days of the hazy, fuzzy 3D images of old. You'll view this delightful adventure with amazing clarity.

So what's the fourth dimension? The experience! When a gentle snowfall sprinkles over The Polar Express, it will actually snow inside the theater as well. When the conductor sings "Hot Chocolate" and the waiters begin to pour, the aroma of delicious hot cocoa will fill the air. As the train rattles along the track, you'll feel the bumps and chugs thanks to clever motorized seats. What was that?! Did something touch your hand? You never know what surprises are in store during this 4D experience.

Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN; has just launched this new attraction as part of its 2008 holiday season. It will run until January 3, 2009 in the park's Imagination Cinema. Patpong Go Go Bars in Bangkok - A Tour of Bangkok's Oldest Red Light District

Thailand's red light districts are famous all over the world for the flashy neon lights and exotic bar girls. One of the most famous and well known red light district is called Patpong located in the capital city of Bangkok.

Patpong first appeared on the map as a major red light destination during the Vietnam War. It was visited mainly by US soldiers for rest and recreation. Back then the scene was more seedy and raunchy. Today Patpong is nothing but a shadow of its former self as millions of tourist from all over the world have replaced the soldiers that once occupied the bar stools. In 2004 Patpong was designated as an official entertainment zone by the Thai government thereby cementing Patpong as a must see destination.

Patpong is a fairly medium sized red light district located on two streets running parallel to each other called Patpong 1 and Patpong 2.

The most popular is Patpong 1 which has the best go go bars bearing the names King's Castle and Queen's Castle. Both of these establishments are basically run by the same management and have a reputation for honest business practices. There are plenty of other go go bars in Patpong located throughout, many of them have been around for many years.

Another reason why Patpong 1 is more popular is because every evening at 6pm the street is closed off to vehicle traffic and an army of street vendors setup the night market. Patpong's Night Market has been a main attraction for thousands of tourist other than men seeking the company of a Thai bar girl. The night market is filled with knock off merchandise such as Gucci handbags to bootleg CD music and latest movies. There is also a higher concentration of live bands covering current popular music and they do draw a large crowd of tourist. There is just much more to do in Patpong 1 for a larger mix of tourist overall.

Patpong 2 on the other hand is like the neglected sister. It doesn't have the same bright lights and noise as Patpong 1 and you won't find the same crowd of tourist wandering there. Patpong 2 has more of an open air bar atmosphere where single men can sit and relax with Thai hostesses ready to keep them company in peace. The most well known go go bar on this street is Club Electric Blue A-Go-Go, which is run by a group of westerners.

All the go go bars in Patpong have a reputation to keep up and since the area has been designated as a entertainment zone by the Thai government safety is a big issue. Which means the establishments here are less likely inclined to cheat you and as for health it is mandatory for ladies working in clubs to test for sexually transmitted diseases.

Patpong of course has much more to see and do such as their traditional and non-traditional massage parlors. There is also popular gay scene with some very interesting clubs to check out. There's even a street for Japanese only customers which is also an interesting stroll through even if you're not Japanese.

If you're planning on visiting any of Bangkok's red light districts but don't want that dirty feeling after-wards, it's best to visit Patpong. The area has been so thoroughly commercialized with international shops and restaurants that you may not even feel like you've entered a red light district.
