Some Thai Girls Aren't Girls

Anyone who has ever visited Thailand will know about the beauty of Thai women. In their twenties, they are striking. In their thirties, they are looking more mature, but still most are very attractive.

The women working in the ubiquitous bars and massage parlors of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket are mostly former housewives, believe it or not, married but separated, with two kids they left back in their village with their mothers. Most are from Isaan, the North-East corner of Thailand, which has a large amount of poverty. Some are from other parts of the country, especially Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and a very few are from Bangkok or central Thailand.

But about 1 in 100 is not a female at all, but a "ladyboy", or katoey in Thai. Quite often, they appear more feminine than the real women. I have seen many a farang ogle and lust after a very sexy woman, not realizing that "she" is a "he".

Like the women, most ladyboys are from Isaan. I have talked to a few on a one to one basis, and asked them when they first knew they wanted to be a female. All said they knew at an early age, around 5 or 6 years old. They said they liked the female manner, didn't like rough sports, were partial to art and music.

Katoeys are an accepted part of Thai culture, considered to be a third sex in Thailand. Several are movie stars and TV announcers. One is a national kick-boxing champion. You will find ladyboys everywhere, working as waiters, store clerks, hairdressers, couriers, etc.

In North America and Europe, a sex-change (also called a gender re-assignment) operation is considered to be a big deal, requiring many months of psychological counseling before the operation to make sure the person is committed to the change.

In Thailand, a sex change operation is quite common. There are several clinics and hospitals which perform it, and the cost is a fraction of what the western charge would be, typically US$5000-7000. Nevertheless, for a poor person from Isaan, $5000 is a huge amount of money.

There are three main areas in Bangkok where ladyboys are present in large numbers: Nana Entertainment Plaza (on Sukhumvit Soi 4), Patpong Road (off Silom), and Soi Cowboy (close to the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Asoke Road, which has both BTS SkyTrain and MRT Subway stations).

At Nana, the majority of ladyboys are "pre-op", meaning they still have a penis. At Patpong and Soi Cowboy, most are "post-op", meaning they have had the operation to create a vagina. The operation involves cutting out a section of intestine, which will become the vagina. The penis is cut open and inserted into the intestinal tube; typically some of the scrotal sac is used to increase the length of the new vagina. The tip of the penis becomes the new clitoris, and is normally still sensitive after the procedure is finished and everything has healed. The ladyboys I talked to said they could still have an orgasm, but did not ejaculate.

Scar tissue is visible if the post-op ladyboy retains his/her public hair, but if it is shaved off, it is difficult to tell an artificially created vagina from the real thing.

However, this is typically not the end of the story in sex reassignment. The male body is typically larger than the female, even in Thailand, where many people seem to be 80% the size of western people. The ladyboy has to take hormones for a couple of years before the operation; these hormones help him grow breasts and reduce his facial and body hair growth. Thai men don't usually have much body hair, compared to Western men, but they do have some; hormones or another treatment are needed to reduce or eliminate it. However, hormones have a side effect of reducing the ability to ejaculate.

Males typically have a protruding Adam's apple, so that is yet another operation: it can be shaved by a surgeon to reduce or eliminate the protrusion. And many have electrolysis to eliminate body hair, especially in the armpits.

If you visit Nana Entertainment Plaza after 7PM (which is when it opens), you will find several hair-dressing establishments located on the decks that run around three sides of the structure. The ones at the front cater to the bar girls; the ones at the rear cater to ladyboys. You can watch some of the ladyboys preening and preparing their makeup.

Some of the bars are exclusively ladyboys. If you enter one such bar, you will find that most ladyboys are more than passable and some are strikingly beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen an ugly ladyboy.

As far as relationships go, ladyboys are just like Thai women. They want a long-term relationship, and they will try hard to make the relationship work. Many speak some English, but you really need a product like Speak Easy Thai to help you learn some basic Thai vocabulary. If you can communicate better, you have a much better chance of a lasting relationship.

A part of Bangkok's nightlife that should not be missed by any visitor, ladyboy cabaret shows are professionally done, with spectacular productions (lots of feathers and glitter, good music, and some comedy as well). You can see them at the Calypso Cabaret (Asia Hotel, Ratchathewi SkyTrain station), Golden Dome Cabaret (15 minute walk from Sutthisan subway station), and Mambo Cabaret in the former Washington Theater between Sukhumvit Soi 22 and 24.

Holiday Ideas for Couples

The world is your oyster when it comes to destinations that offer the magic of romance. Choosing the perfect getaway can be quite a task, because you would like it to be the perfect holiday of your life. The options are an endless list of beautiful destinations scattered all over the globe. Everybody's idea of an amorous time is drastically different from the other. The first step in planning your trip is to know the likes and dislikes of your partner. Nothing works as good as, a consensus on a holiday destination but if there are differences, let your partner get his or her way. This gesture can be the ideal way to begin the journey.

Wild and Exciting Mountains Getaways
If you are an adventurous and a daring couple, a rafting or hiking activity might just be the stimulus to rekindle the romance in your life. Peaks and waterfalls can be your choice for a lovely weekend. You can relive the splendor of Scandinavian peaks in Finland or the fun-filled holidays of Czech Republic or beautiful East Europe. If mountains and adventure are your calling, then New Zealand, Australia and North America offer the best in paragliding, yachting, bungee-jumping, scuba diving and a host of adventure sports.

If you want to get that exhilarating feeling of being on the top of the world, mountain biking in the Swiss Alps or the Austrian mountains is a good option. Imagine your partner and you, riding alongside on a lonely trail of the majestic peaks, taking in the fresh mountain air along with the breath-taking scenery that would simply mesmerize every lovelorn couple! Skiing in the snowy peaks of Italy or simply enjoying the winter sports in the Canadian or French mountains will definitely pamper your partner.

Jungle and Wildlife Getaways
If being among the wild animals and learning more about their life, is what beholds your imagination, an African Safari can work wonders on your mood. If jungle and wild life are your idea of a tranquil and serene setting, the Amazon outing in South America may just be a lovely option for a holiday. A rainforest tour, where nature holds the both of you spell-bound, with its bountiful greenery and an exotic play of rain, wind and cries of animals and birds, will enliven your souls to the core. A Savannah grassland eco-tour in the wild open spaces in Australia, can be an extravagant treat for a couple. Amidst the koalas, kangaroos and the colorful bird life, all you need do is sit back and enjoy the beautiful aspects of the Australian outback as they unfold before your eyes.

If you can't get enough of sight-seeing, a visit to the Indian sub-continent would be another great option. An Indian tour offers a spectacular view of life with its diverse human life and variety of flora and fauna. The tropical backwaters of Kerala, India provides a picturesque and an utopian setting, complete with houseboats and welcoming village stay. The spirituality inspired by the peaceful Hindu temples and culture in India is abundantly felt in its mystical forests and the rich wildlife will make it a worthwhile stay, away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Sightseeing
Many couples wish to add some real experiences from different cultures and civilizations to their knowledge bank, which can also be an ideal vacation for some lifetime treats, together. A theme park tour is a must-visit for all fun-loving couples. Disney Vacations in Paris or Orlando, Florida, in the US are places where all your favorite cartoons 'come alive'. The magical feel of these ingenious creations of the human mind, will bring the momentous smile to your lover's face; a sight, you look forward to treasure all your life!

The other most viable option is to take a trip to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. The most beautiful structure on this planet was built as an everlasting symbol of love of a king, for his queen. Perhaps, you will get the goose bumps as you and your partner take in the sight of the symbol of love. 'A thing of beauty is a joy forever'; and there can be no better specimen of beauty than the Taj Mahal, making it a preferred option for a couple's holiday. The other options can be the historical sites in India, the great Pyramids of Egypt or a weeks tour of major European cities; all of which would make your trip a memorable experience.

Beaches
Sun, sand and sea; along with you and the most precious individual in your life. Many believe, that the idea of a romantic holiday for a couple is simply incomplete without a tranquil and a 'lovey-dovey' beach getaway. There are a lot of beaches that can redefine the passionate and exuberant romance in your life. Some amazing holiday destinations that can be on your list are- Bondi Beach in Australia, Seychelles, Corfu in Greece, the Canary islands in Spain, the Hawaiian beaches, Caribbean shores, Maldives or Thailand's tropical beaches and of course the US beach resorts on both the East and the West coast. A stay at any of these places will gladden the soul and spirit.

A piece from the movie, Captain Corelli's Mandolin exemplifies best, what love is; "Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love which any of us can convince ourselves we are.

Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two."

Wish all the couples a pleasant time, as they look forward to starting the perfect holiday.

Where To Find The Best Art In Thailand

Being the country's most significant handicraft hub, Chiang Mai located in the northern part of Thailand is surrounded by workshops and factories where visitors can observe the craftsmen at work before purchasing the product. Most of these shopping places are in general frequented by those buyers looking for wholesale bargains.

Well-stocked places to shop in Chiang Mai come in varied and wide range of sizes and shapes. The provincial capital, which is rightfully nicknamed "Rose of the North", represents more than ten large shopping complexes, about 15 lively markets and countless trendy boutiques and galleries selling antiques, art and local handicrafts.

Chiang Mai's best shopping area and one of Thailand's top tourist attractions is the bustling night bazaar. This vast market in the downtown area every evening takes up several blocks positioned along Chang Klan road. Here huge crowds of international travellers stroll along the numerous arcades and pavement stalls.

The selection of goods on offer is truly staggering and some of the available items include: shoes, travel accessories, backpacks, home decorations, furniture, woodcrafts, umbrellas, watches, purses, wallets, sunglasses, clothing, video games, DVDs, CDs, DVDs, Thai silk, antiques and jewellery. Quality standards vary from vendor to vendor but inexpensive rates mean that the buyer nearly always gets good value for his money.

One of the most unique gift items on offer at the night bazaar is an entirely handmade portrait painting or charcoal pencil drawing. Chiang Mai houses the world's most skilful portraitists, creating lifelike portraits from photographs right onsite. The most popular portrait art gifts with tourists feature family portraits, children's portraits, pet portraits, newborn portraitists and nude portraits.

In addition, portrait artists in Chiang Mai also create a range of other artworks such as psychedelic art, spiritual paintings, portraits of rock stars, rural landscapes, Buddha images, portraits of colourful hill tribe people and various exotic animals. Most of the painters here enjoyed education at one of Thailand's prestigious art schools, such as Silpakorn University in Bangkok.

However, those visitors wishing to have one of their loved ones immortalised on canvas or paper should still be cautious. There are also 'portrait artists' active offering charcoal sketches and oil colour portraits at very low fees. Often these painters didn't enjoy art school education and they might create artworks of poor artistic quality.

Perhaps you've become interested after reading this but unfortunately can not travel to Chiang Mai. No worries! The solution can be found on the internet. Custom portraits created by some of Chiang Mai's finest artists can be safely ordered online as well. There's a reliable, professional and efficient online portrait art supplier offering the highest quality of work at very affordable prices.

Customers have the opportunity sending one of their most special photos by email or upload it directly to their website. The company's graduated portraitists will turn customers' received pictures into stunning, lifelike oil colour portraits as well as black and white charcoal pencil drawings. You as well can get a unique portrait gift within less than 15 working days.

Ladyboys of Phuket

When I first told my friends that I was planning an extended stay in Thailand, it is amazing how many times I heard the same stupid reply - "watch out for them ladyboys!" Again and again, I heard this inane comment until it really started to grate. Everybody making the same stupid joke as if it was clever and original. What a ridiculous stereotype of Thailand, I thought. As if there are ladyboys everywhere you go.

The funny thing is, once I moved to Thailand, I soon discovered that ladyboys, or katoeys as they are known in Thailand, really are everywhere. It is not just a handful of them working the tourist resorts. You will see them working in shops and restaurants. Even if you go out into the country, you will find katoeys. They really are everywhere.

In fact, I had not been here long before I had a personal acquaintance who was a katoey. One of the things I noticed was just how comfortable other Thais were in her company. Straight Thai men were quite happy to give her compliments such as telling her how beautiful she looked. They all called her 'she' as it is polite and made her happy.

Personally, I was initially a little uncomfortable in her presence. I wasn't scared she would jump on me. She was a pleasant and well-balanced person. I was just a little unsure how to deal with her. It was the charming way the other Thais treated her that soon put me at ease.

What is a Katoey?

What exactly is a katoey? I had this discussion with a couple of western friends recently. They both live in Phuket and both said that you can only call someone a katoey if they have had gender altering surgery; otherwise, you should use the term ladyboy. This I feel is a western invented distinction. Katoey is a Thai word and that is not how it is used.

Thais use the term much more loosely. They use the term for any man who acts like a woman. Transgender male is probably the closest English term. Men who have gender altering surgery are katoeys. So are those who take hormones to create female attributes such as breasts. So are those who dress up like a woman. In fact, even gay men who put on a bit of make up and flounce around are referred to as katoeys.

Why so many Katoeys in Thailand?

By this definition, there certainly are plenty of katoeys in Thailand. So why is this phenomenon so much more common here than in other countries? It seems unlikely that there is a genetic reason for Thailand to have more transgender males than other countries. I think the reason is much more to do with the tolerant attitude of the Thai people.

There are many katoey TV stars, singers and models. They even have katoey beauty contests. There have been several katoey movies such as 'Beautiful Boxer' which is the true story of a katoey who became a champion Muay Thai fighter. She would often kiss her defeated opponents.

Katoeys seem to be a widely accepted part of Thai society. This is probably partly to do with the Buddhist religion and its preaching of tolerance towards others. However, other countries with a strong Buddhist influence (Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Laos, Japan) are not known for their ladyboys.

There must be something else at work. I think one strong factor is the Thai belief that life should be fun (sanook). When they see a katoey, they think it is fun. They will laugh and joke about it but not in a nasty way. They certainly will not hurl abuse or threats as might happen in western countries.

So the main reason why there are so many katoeys in Thailand is simply that Thai society is open and tolerant to them. It makes you wonder how many transvestites there might be in western countries if our societies were a little more forgiving.

How Many Katoeys Work in Phuket?

In the wake of the tsunami tragedy and the media feeding frenzy that followed, a friend sent me an article from a British newspaper. The reporter was in Phuket and obviously struggling to compete for attention with reporters at harder hit areas. So he did what a lot of reporters in Phuket did and started focusing on the seedier side of the local nightlife. Quite what this had to do with the tsunami tragedy I am not sure.

This particular reporter seemed to be fascinated with the ladyboy scene. He made a few sweeping generalisations about Phuket's nightlife, suggesting the whole island was truly a cesspit of debauchery. He then claimed there were 5,000 ladyboys working in Phuket's sex industry and a huge demand for their services.

Where did he get this figure? It seems like a very bold claim. Is there a census? Do the authorities make a ladyboy count? I really doubt there was a reliable statistic available to this reporter. Like most of his report, I think he just made it up but he obviously saw enough ladyboys around to think it was a reasonable guess.

Phuket's high season population is estimated to be around 500,000. If 5,000 of them are ladyboys then that would be 1% of the population. That would seem very unlikely but not totally inconceivable. But he said 5,000 actually working in the sex industry. Where was this army of available ladyboys?

At Soi Katoey in Bangla Road, Patong, there are always a few dancing at the front of the soi. There is another katoey bar at the back and Moulin Rouge ladyboy show. But surely even at the highest estimate, there could not be more than 50 ladyboys working in Soi Katoey. There are maybe another 30 performing at Simon Cabaret Ladyboy Show - does that even count as the sex industry? For the sake of argument, let's say it does. Then there is the gay area around Soi Paradise. There are quite a few ladyboys around this area but I think an estimate of 100 would be very generous.

There are a few ladyboys freelancing along the beachfronts where they annoy passing drunks. But really, they are not there in very high numbers. Let's be generous again and say 100. Have I missed any? Maybe there are a few dotted around other sex establishments.

So even if we round up my figures, we have a very generous guesstimate of 300 ladyboys active in the sex industry. I actually think that is probably extremely generous. A lot of the above figures are probably the same katoeys moving from location to location and I think I have overestimated all my guesses. The total figure could be as few as 100.

So I would say somewhere between 100-300 katoeys working in Phuket's sex industry. Certainly not 5,000 but then a figure of 100 would not make good press.

Men and Katoeys

So what about the demand for Katoeys? Are there really lots of men looking for their services? Since their most common approach seems to be trying to fool very drunk men, I would guess that their services are not massively in demand. I have met a few men who have had sexual encounters with katoeys. Most of them claim it was a drunken mistake.

I did meet one guy who happily proclaimed he had just been 'blown off' by two katoeys in his hotel room. He was rather proud of himself and certainly not claiming it was a mistake. You do meet some funny characters in Patong.

I guess there is some genuine demand for katoeys. Although they are active in the gay area, I do not think it is strictly a gay thing. Although they are made-up as women, I do not think it is a straight thing. But there is a hard-to-define group of men who do find katoeys attractive. Certainly, there is a lot of curiosity about them. Every month, the word 'katoey' is in the top 20 list of search keywords that have led people to our Phuket website. And we only have a small section on katoeys.

Negatives

Although katoeys are generally well accepted in Thai society there is still a negative side to their reputation. They do have a reputation for being spiteful and untrustworthy. I have personally met a few during my years in Thailand and I have to say that on the outside they all seemed well adapted and happy. However, I have also heard plenty of stories of katoeys involved in criminal activities such as pick pocketing and other thefts. They have also been known to harass and threaten passers-by late at night while looking for customers along the beachfronts.

These things certainly do happen but the scale of the problem is not clear. Whether katoeys really commit crime on a scale greater than other Thais is hard to judge.

They also have a reputation for being emotionally unbalanced. As I said, all the ones I have met have seemed fine. However, I think it is fair to say that the strains of their lives are very demanding and it is not surprising that many of them lose emotional control easily.

The tolerance of katoeys in Thai society is not absolute. Their families, particularly the fathers, sometimes reject them. Men who in most other ways are tolerant of katoeys, can still find it shameful to father one.

And the authorities' tolerance also has its limits. When a katoey volleyball team won the national championship, two of the team were selected for the national team. The government stepped in and blocked their selection. They did not think it was good for the country's image.

Saving Private Tootsie

In 2002, there was a Thai movie given the English title 'Saving Private Tootsie'. In this movie, a plane crash strands a group of katoeys in the jungle of a war torn neighbouring country. A group of macho Thai soldiers is sent to rescue them. The story revolves around the personality clashes between the flouncy katoeys and the macho soldiers as they try to escape this neighbouring country.

In the end, they all pull together to make the final crossing back to Thailand. The soldiers put aside their dislike for the katoeys and their leader returns home to finally accept his son, who is also a katoey.

The movie's message is one of tolerance that is typical of Thai society. At the end of the movie there is a nice quote from one katoey. "I may have been born in the wrong body, but at least I was born in the right country."

Collectibles Today

There are as many kinds of collectibles as there are kinds of people. One of the most popular collectibles there is relates to soft drinks. These collectibles range from things created when the beverages were first formulated to more recent limited bottles or cans and even promotional items. Some collectors also specialize in soda machines as well.

Bottles are one of the more common collectibles since they aren't space hogs and are available in an array of styles. The prices also come in in a wide array, which is also wonderful. Most desirable of all, and bringing a higher price are bottles that still contain the product.

Soda related collectibles fans have been specializing in single brands. Of these, there are quite a few fans of Pepsi, which was created in 1893 by a druggist in North Carolina named Caleb Bradham. It was originally called "Brad's Drink". Five years later, it was renamed Pepsi. Older bottles, which are rarer, are valued higher, although some more recent specially produced bottles will bring top dollar, such as the Elvis bottles from a few years ago.

Containers that are representative of a style change are of particular worth to collectors, no return bottles and the first cans being examples. Logo changes such as shape, label, or colors are also of particular interest. Several people collect the wood cases that bottles used to be stored in or the cardboard six pack holders with intricate designs on them.

Signs are another popular collectible. These can be outdoor signs made from wood or metal, or indoor display signs of various shapes, sizes and designs, or even murals when whole walls may be removed and sold. Some signs include lighting or clocks and are popular for their functionality. Condition is a huge factor in value and treasured collectibles are wooden signs that were stored indoors before much weathering and still in new condition.

Another popular item is the soda machine. Some collectors specialize in Pepsi machines alone. These will range from the metal box that contained ice and bottles, to the more recent, automated machines, and all that fell between. There are many that are available, the most valued still function. The prices will range from below $100 up to a few thousand dollars for rarer machines.

Other collectibles can include nearly anything from sweatshirts to china. Limited edition merchandise is commonly made by soft drink companies and is very easy to find online from specialists in soda memorabilia or on auction sites. Glasses and trays are popular and one of the most affordable items.

The Benefits of Getting Plastic Surgery Done in Another Country

VIP treatment in Thailand - Plastic Surgery at Affordable Prices

It wasn't long after I learned about the "idea" of surgery vacations at a local travel show in Long Beach that I dared take one of the greatest adventures of my life -- a memorable 1st trip to Thailand -- with a face lift "on the side."

VIP treatment began at Bangkok's airport when I was picked up and taken directly to YanHee International Hospital, where my surgeon and staff awaited my evening arrival. Thailand hospitals are immaculate and staffed with lots of beautiful RNs, who tend to be charming, as well as knowledgeable and efficient. My plastic surgeon, Dr. Vitawat Angkatavanich, made me feel as if he had all the time in the world to answer any questions and address my concerns - in perfect English.

Although I had prepared myself mentally and emotionally to have the procedure done before I left home, I promised to listen to my instincts and back out, even at the last moment. After all this was only research... I was supremely lucky to cross paths with the right doctor, at the right hospital.

All this sweet and respectful attention centered on me was very pleasing. After about an hour, I gave the go ahead to Dr. Vitawat to perform my face and neck lift. "Before" pictures were taken. Directives were issued to start tests early in the morning. Surgery was scheduled for 1PM.

It was now around 9PM - enough time for my companion Barry and I to grab a taxi to the nearest night market. We bought shoes...new shoes for exploring a new land.

In the morning, my anesthesiologist was one of the first to visit. She earnestly explained, in English, the risks of anesthesia, and the procedure, reminding me that I was facing major surgery. "Yes. Yes." I assured her. I was confident in my decision.

I was dozing off as they rolled me to the operating theater. Along the way, I noticed that I was being transferred to a number of different gurneys. Groggily, I complained about being jostled so often, when a voice assured me it was nothing to worry about. This was to ensure that I was kept in a sterile environment.

In fact, MRSA infections are almost nonexistent in Thailand hospitals, whereas we've got better than a 60% chance of catching a staph infection in hospitals in the US, the UK, or Canada. And those statistics are climbing.

The level of care provided was superlative. After surgery, my button requests were answered within minutes. Movie stars get treatment like this.

No worries about the language barrier here. The RN's seem to travel in groups. It's most endearing to wake up and see a cluster of Thai faces, in crisp nurses hats, gathered around your bed, deeply concerned about how you are feeling. It was soon apparent that what one doesn't understand another one will, and somehow, everyone ends up happy in this, "Land of Smiles" - especially the patient.

My private room had a balcony with a view of Bangkok. Barry was free to roam but bunked in with me on a comfortable cot for the duration of my 3 day stay. It was great to have him witness my experience.

After surgery, my diet consisted of fruit and vegetable juices while he ordered aromatic Thai gourmet dishes that I found impossible to resist tasting.

My fine doctor stopped in again on the morning of departure. We met about a week later when I returned to have some stitches removed. He was there for a final look and I was given the green light to fly back home to LA.

Discharge Day -

Before leaving Yanhee, I was given a local cell phone with programmed contact numbers. An English speaking driver, who was at our disposal, was there to pick up and drop us off at the 5 star, Majestic Grand Hotel, off Sukumvit. The concierge had been alerted. A fruit basket awaited us in a lovely room. A pool, beautiful Spa and 24 hour room service was also available.

It was only the 4th day after surgery but rather than resting and staying put at this gorgeous hotel, our driver had some suggestions. I felt well enough to shop the floating market, ride an elephant, and enjoy a traditional Thai meal before attending a staged Thai cultural event - all in the same day, few hours from Bangkok.

Countless, memorable experiences awaited us in Thailand and the richness of Bangkok was ripe for exploring. We decided to move down the street to the 3 star, Majestic Hotel on Sukumvit for a few days and shopped till we dropped. Our driver suggested a boutique hotel on the Chao Praya River, not far from the fascinating Oriental and Peninsula Hotels, as well as the famous, backpacker inn, the River View, where we enjoyed a casual, inexpensive dinner on the terrace with its million dollar view. It was as memorable as the dark, scary walk through Chinatown on the way home. No worries though, Bangkok is an amazingly safe city.

ALERT! - Taxi driver - ALERT!
Fortunately, the only weak link in Bangkok are the taxis. We were fortunate to have a driver with a good understanding of English, which isn't the norm.

He knew the city and surrounding area well and made great suggestions. We skipped the tailor shop, but really enjoyed a stop at the Jewelry center. Bangkok is known for its precious stones, especially its rubies.

It's always best to carry a card from your hotel or hospital with its address and telephone number, in case you decide to hop a cab or a Tuk-Tuk.

Save yourself a lot of transit trouble -

Before climbing into a taxi:

1. Make sure it's a Metered Taxi and that the driver has his license displayed on the dash.
2. Never agree to make a deal without the meter running.
3. Ask the door man, who will generally understand English, to confirm the destination with the taxi driver and perhaps write the address or Soi number in Thai for the driver.
4. All drivers have cell phones. When in doubt, ask them to call for instructions and tip them an extra 20 baht for the favor, when you finally arrive.
5. You are expected to pay for any tolls, so make sure you have small change.

Accept that traffic is awful in Bangkok -

It's a toss-up as to whether or not it's worse than the #405 in LA. Do yourself a favor. Trust the BTS Sky-Train or MRT Subway to get you to Bangkok's fabulous malls, the weekend, or night markets, as well as most events in town. Bangkok's streets and public transportation are immaculate. Signage is in Thai as well as English, with lots of uniformed security people available for help along the way.

Wear loose, lightweight clothing - and sturdy shoes, as the sidewalks are neglected. Expect to climb stairs. Asia wasn't created with the disabled in mind.

Recuperation at Home -
I don't remember any kind of real pain, just a little discomfort. More than 2 months after my surgery, I noted that my face was still a bit swollen on one side, and it itched a little, but the numbness was going away. As a side sleeper, the worst part of my surgery was getting used to sleeping on my back. Once off all meds and home sleeping in my own bed, it was challenging find the right pillow or the perfect spot. My cozy couch saved many a night because the pillows made it difficult to turn over without waking to reposition myself. A few months later, all was forgotten and I was just enjoying the results.

I look at least ten years younger. Women in my circle can easily spend more than that in a year on facial treatments and make-up alone. I'm thrilled not to be covering my saggy neck, or creepy jowls with high necklines and scarves. Now, with everything back in place on my face, there's not much to cover up or disguise. Eyebrow pencil, an eyelash curler, and some colored lip gloss gets me out the door in the morning. At the end of the day, when I wash my face and brush my teeth, I enjoy the familiar face of my late 40's smiling back at me.

Thailand elects first female PM

Thailand's powerful military will respect a landslide election win by allies of Thaksin Shinawatra, who it toppled five years ago, the defence minister said Monday, easing fears of another coup. Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra, a 44-year-old political novice now set to become the kingdom's first female premier, announced a coalition deal with four smaller parties to bolster her hold on power. The election and its aftermath is a major test of Thailand's ability to emerge from a long political crisis triggered by Thaksin's 2006 overthrow that last year saw the country's worst civil violence in decades. I Will Come For You

My mum always says that when you have children, you want them to know how much you love them, how important they are to you and that no matter what trouble they get themselves into, you will come for them.

I once lived in Thailand and during a trip to the beach one day, my parents spoke to an older man who said he was looking for his son. His son had left for a trip in Asia with a friend and had not returned for a very long time. His friend had returned home with serious drug-induced damage to his brain and was unable to tell anyone where the man's son was. The father had decided that he would fly to India, and then to Thailand, and look for his son, no matter how long it took, how much it cost or where he would have to go. And he found him!

One of the ways my parents have found to show me they would come for me is by recommending movies that they think will portray what they feel. While the movies are not directly about our family, the feelings come across perfectly and the movies make me think what they (and I) would do in a similar situation.

The movies that show parents' love for their children have been some of my all time favorites. One movie that I was particularly impressed with was called "Evelyn". The movie is based on a true story, set in Ireland in1953. Desmond Doyle (played superbly by Pierce Brosnan) is deserted by his wife for another man on the day after Christmas and is left unemployed with 3 children. Desmond struggles to raise his kids and show them his love as a single father but is reported by his wife's mother to the authorities. The Children's Act of 1941 stated that a man is not able to care for his children without a mother and therefore his children must be placed in state care. The power of the Church and the Irish courts placed the 2 Doyle boys, Dermot and Maurice, in an orphanage and the young Evelyn Doyle in a Convent.

The courts state that Desmond needs to find employment and improve his means to care for his children before he can get them back. Desmond stops drinking and with the help of his father, Desmond earns some money singing in his local pub and then finds work. The courts inform him that he needs the mother's consent to release his children from care, which he cannot do, as the mother is in Australia with her new lover.

Meanwhile, the three young Doyle kids, and particularly Evelyn, are abused in their new "homes". Every time he hears about it, Desmond runs to the rescue, beating senseless anyone who dares touch them.

With the help of a local waitress, 2 solicitors and a retired barrister, he decides to take the case to the Supreme Court to challenge the Irish Constitution and set a new precedent in Irish law. Doyle's fight to keep his family together becomes an inspiring testament to the strength of a father's love and the power of the human spirit.

I do not have any children of my own yet, but I know I will go to the ends of the Earth to save them when they need me.

7-Eleven Inc Franchise Review

The 7-Eleven Inc is a multinational corporation that has got the maximum number of franchisees and retail stores across the globe. Pertinently, the significance of the company is huge in the context of business done by convenience stores due to sheer volume of transactions and multifarious products and services being traded. The solid management foundation of the company and the professional attitude in addition to the motivation, planning and hard work of the officials and staffs make 7-Eleven franchisees lucrative options to look into while considering long term investments.

It is obvious to think of considerable positive returns on investments in fairly quick time. The 7-Eleven Inc franchisees are good avenues to account for such factors. In fact, the franchisees that had been set up in various locations in the world have evidently exhibited financial success and continuing to do so with great flair.

The franchisees work on unique concepts of the brand and its value in doing business in a variety of products. The company's service for renting movies known by the name Movie Quik is popular. Chief Auto Parts is yet another well known brand name from the house of 7-Eleven Inc. But perhaps the most famous of its brands is the Big Gulp that has its name attached to fountain drinks of various sizes.

The marketing strategies of 7-Eleven Inc are original and are tailored in a well formatted manner so that the customers, both existing and potential, come in the radar of its products and services. The company is into sports marketing and also applies the strategies in other spheres like popular entertainments. These methods essentially make it easy for the franchisees to smoothly run their business without many hassles. There is always a provision of exhaustive consultation with the mother company when the operations and functioning of the business face any hurdles. There is total transparency in between every stratum of workers within the company and also across the franchisees of 7-Eleven Inc.

An important point to be taken into serious consideration before setting up a 7-Eleven franchise is the country where it is to be started. The reason is the company's franchisees are managed by different retail groups to give them more flexibility in running the vast operations. AS for example, in Thailand the shops are run under the company Charoen Pokphand Group and in the Scandinavian region by the Reitan Group.

A notable attribute of the 7-Eleven franchisees is that they are open for 24 hours each day, 7 days a week. Even few of the top convenience store brands in the world cannot boast of such a striking feature. This clearly indicates that the company 7-Eleven Inc takes business very seriously and is always willing to serve its customers, rendering the foremost priority to their convenience.

It is without any sort of doubt that with each passing day the popularity of the 7-Eleven Inc is gaining further momentum. It has got massive expansion plans that will also consider the developing countries across the globe.

Top 10 Buddhist Temples to Visit in Bangkok, Thailand

Whether your are a practicing Buddhist, Hindu, Sangha or just an interested tourist or interior decorator one thing is assured when visiting the temples of Bangkok- YOU WILL BE INSPIRED!

We are about to reveal our top ten picks when visiting Bangkok, but before we do here are a few additional tips: A. Hire a guide. Your hotel can arrange for them, it supports the local economy and are still affordable. B. Map out which temples you want to see on what days. You can use this pre-planning to help save money on packing lunches or stop in at a local coffee or sandwich shop to get even more emerged into the local color. C. Hire transportation. This adds to your security and is not cost prohibitive. Sometimes your guide will provide transportation in their fees. D. Remember you sun block, camera, water and snacks. E. Extra Bhat for entry offering for each temple. Prices will be listed in your temple guide book you pick up at the hotels.

1. Everyone's first pick has got to be Wat Phra Kaew- the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha was created in India in 43 BC. It is made of green jasper rather than emerald and clothed in golden robes; it stands about 45 cm tall. But as impressive as this Buddha is... that is not why the Wat Phra Kaew Temple is so Spiritually and culturally important. Wat Phra Kaew is of primary significance because the Temple's connect to the King- Thailand's Spiritual Leader! The Temple is built on the grounds of the grand palace and hosts many other religious artifacts and ancient manuscripts with in their two libraries.

2. It may not be "everyone's second pick, but the Wat Traimit-or Temple of the Golden Buddha, has my vote for second position. Why? Because it houses the Largest Solid Gold Buddha in the World! It stands about 15 feet tall and weight over 11 tons! In ancient times it was covered in plaster to hide its value from marauding armies. Then in 1955 while being moved a monk noticed a crack in the exterior and a yellow sparkle inside. This gives a Buddhist meaning to the American colloquialism; "Don't judge a book by its cover."

3. Third is the iconic Wat Arun- the Temple of Dawn. Built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It predates Bangkok as the set of government and it's massive 260 foot high Buddha can easily be seen from all over the neighboring areas. It is a majestic sight to see...especially at sun set or rise!

4. Wat Pho- the Temple of the Reclining Buddha is my number 4 pick. Why? Because being the birth place of Traditional Thai massage... for a few Bhat one can be smoothed into peaceful tranquility during you long days of touring. This busy Temple is adjacent to grand palace and it is common to see a Thai dance performance or be engaged by a monk wishing to practice his English. This Temples "One - Two" punch has got to be: A. It's 150 foot long Reclining Buddha monolith. B. It's large 1,000 Buddha Statues placed all around the grounds. (Here a Buddha, there a Buddha, everywhere a Buddha!)

5. Wat Mahathat is my 5th choice. The Temple of the Great Relic is the headquarters of Thailand's largest monastic order and *Vipassana Meditation centre. [ Vipassana- which means to see things as they really are. And is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation being practiced in Thailand. ] The temple was originally built to house a relic of the Buddha and is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. Interestingly enough you can also have your fortune told inside the 'wat' (temple) by a seasoned monk. [If you have seen the movie: "Eat, Pray, Love," you'll have an idea of the gentle spirited monk that will be sitting across from you.]

6. Once the highest mount in Bangkok, Wat Saketor- the Temple of the Golden Mount was built by King Rama III in 1800's. The original temple collapsed and was rebuilt to house a relic of Lord Buddha. It's 300 steps to the top will not make you short of breath but it's towering 260 foot tall gold chedi just might leave you speechless.

7. The Temple of the Fifth King- King Rama V is named: Wat Benchamabophit is also known by foreigners as the Marble Temple. Constructed from pristine white Carrara marble form Italy... this temple is the hidden gem on our list. It is not to be missed if you are touring in Bangkok for two days or longer! One should walk around the whole Temple and building structures to admiring the intricate and colorful decoration of the windows and especially the gables. Wat Benchamabophitis a royal monastery belonging to the first class ranking of Rajavaravihara. It is located close to Dusit palace in the city district of Bangkok called Dusit.

8. Though not much of a tourist draw, the Wat Suthat- is the temple that keep on giving with it interesting history, multi-cultural art and architecture. It comes in at number 8 on our list for its inauspicious size and most auspicious history. The Temple took the reign of three kings before it was completed. It houses the 25 foot tall Buddha statue Phra Sri Sakyamuni or "Sisakayamunee". This Temple also doubles as a monk's home and is decorated with over 150 additional golden Buddha sculptures and numerous Buddhist art murals.

9. Though near the bottom of our list the Wat Ratchabophit may not be the last Temple to visit in chronological order as it is located within walking distance from Wat Suthat and the Giant Swing. After coming to the throne, this pagoda was the first Temple commissioned to be built by King Rama V in 1869. The entire compound of the Wat holds a cluster of buildings, all built on elevated bases, sheathed with marble. With its exquisite architecture, a beauty of the exteriors; adorned with hand-painted glazed tiles, and studded door and window frames of the buildings, the Wat Ratchabophit, though small in size, claims distinction as one of the most beautiful temples of Thailand.

10. This ancient Temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period; is also adjacent to the Grand place and is called Wat Rakhang. The Temples name means "bell". During the rign of King Rama II a large bell was unearthed on the premises and was later moved to Wat Phra Kaewin exchange for five smaller bells. The halls and grounds are lovely here. And if your into seeing the homesteads of famous people, here you would find the Thai version in its' "ho trai." The house where king Rama I lived before he was crowned.

Movie Review - Beyond Rangoon

Beyond Rangoon is a dramatic movie involving numerous deaths and bloodshed. The main character of the movie, Laura Bowman, played by Patricia Arquette, has recently returned to her home in the United States to find her husband and young son murdered. In order to clear her mind and get her back on track, Laura's sister, Andy Bowman, takes her on a trip to exotic Burma.

This movie takes on some international issues as well based on the fact that Burma is an unstable country led by a military dictatorship. The filming of this movie was done in nearby Malaysia since Burma and the United States are hateful of each other. Burma's government is very aggressive and is not afraid to kill its citizens, especially during a democratic uprising as shown in the movie. A female named Aung San Suu Kyi, still alive and on house arrest today, was responsible for creating hope and joy that democracy would one day take over Burma.

While parading with her supporters in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was met by military force. She forced the men with guns drawn to stand aside while she continued her march with Laura Bowman watching the whole time. Bowman would later return to her hotel after watching Aung San Suu Kyi with admiration to find that the military police were waiting for her with her sister. They were all ordered to leave the next day since Bowman did not respect Burma's curfew laws for Americans.

While preparing to leave Burma for safety, Laura Bowman realized she had her passport stolen the night before while at the democracy demonstration. She was forced to stay behind in Burma while her sister Andy and their friend flew into a nearby country. Laura decided that even though there was much shooting and killing happening in the streets due to the democratic uprising, she would hire a tour guide to visit the countryside. Her tour guide takes her through numerous military checkpoints while bribing the military guards in his 1970's Chevrolet. The two of them eventually stop by a house full of Burmese college students who are talking of their love for Aung San Suu Kyi. However, after a brief stay, news reaches them that the military is coming to kill them all since they are not in line with the dictatorship's beliefs.

The group piles into three cars and leaves for the local train station. The tour guide ends up being shot while trying to escape after the military recognizes him as a professor and rebel against the dictatorship. Laura, who had already boarded the train to leave, comes back to save the professor and drives him away in the Chevrolet. They end up being pursued by the military who are trying hard to kill them, when Laura drives the professor's car into a river. The two must swim down the river under some brush while being shot at in order to escape.

They eventually find a local Burmese man with two young boys who take them down river to find medicine. The professor has been shot in the chest and is fading quickly, but Laura Bowman is a doctor and can save him if they can find medicine and surgical tools. Laura and the professor eventually stop at a Burmese village where Laura sneaks through military guards and finds a medical structure. She obtains her tools and medicines and is ready to leave when a guard catches her. He decides not to kill her, but instead wants her to perform sexual favors. She was lucky enough to borrow a gun from the man who floated her down the river in his boat, and shoots the military guard in his leg allowing her to escape.

Bowman and the professor board the boat again and float down the river more until they get back onto land and attempt to escape to Thailand. There are thousands of people still being killed and trying to flee the country, but the two manage to board an ex-military truck full of refugees on their way to safety. Again, they are chased down by a military jeep which forces them off the road and into the river again. Laura and the professor manage to escape again with many of the refugees, and start wandering through the forest.

After walking through the forest for several hours, they are again met by military resistance. The common theme in this movie is that the Burmese military does not care who you are; if you look suspicious they will not hesitate to kill. A friendly, underground-type military group also arrives and fights off the cruel military group allowing the refugees a chance to cross a bridge over the river and safely enter Thailand. The dictatorship military keeps firing rockets and guns from afar and kills another three or four refugees when they had safety in sight. A young man is killed while holding his baby and is forced to hand off his child to his wife while he floated down river to his death. Laura makes sure to comfort his wife once she and the professor cross the bridge into Thailand.

Overall, this movie was very intense and somewhat cheesy at times. There is some obvious bad acting by some of the foreign actors in the movie. Also, at the end, the bridge to safety in Thailand has a big sign that reads "Welcome to Thailand". This part of the movie seemed very unrealistic and like it was too happy of an ending. When everyone crosses into Thailand there is a Red Cross hospital set up where Laura puts her skills to work in caring for all of the injured Burmese people. This movie had a very good plot and gives much history about Burma and its diplomatic relations with the world. I rate this movie a 3.5 out of 5.

Orlando - Attractions For Kids And Grown-Ups

Orlando is located in Florida. This is the most «summery» city in the USA, known for its excellent weather, beautiful and lush nature and well-developed infrastructure. Travelers from all around the planet head for Orlando in search of fun. The name of the city derives from the name of a soldier Orlando Reeves, who died here during the war against the Seminole Indian tribe.

Few people would know of Orlando if the Walt Disney World - the unique theme park - was not constructed here. That is why one can say that the year 1965 has changed the city's history. This was the year when Walter Disney, a famous American film producer, started to implement his plans of turning this deserted land into the world of fantasy. The giant Disney World occupies a 113 sq.m. territory. Its the place where children and kids alike dip into the magical fairytale world, the world where dreams come true. The park's territory is divided into several areas, each with its own name and its own attractions.

If you've never been here you can't even imagine how great the park is. Altogether «Disneylands» of Los Angeles, Paris, Spain and Tokyo are only a half of that in Orlando. But don't think that the park was built for children only. In addition to kids areas, there are golf courts, night clubs and what not.

Each area has its attractions. For instance, Magic Kingdom contains an Adventureland, with rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise, a Liberty Square has the Hall of Presidents and other democratic attributes. Fantasyland is filled with the Peter Pan's Flight, Dumbo the Flying Elephant and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh spirit. There is also a Tomorrowland with such attractions as the Starcade, Astro Orbitor, Disneyland Railroad and others. Names of the parks speak for themselves and describing their advantages would take too long. But one of the park's most visited attractions is Disney-MGM Studios where visitors can meet their favourite cartoon characters.

Inhabitants of the sea - from polar bears of the Arctic to inhabtitants of the tropic waters - can be observed at the "Sea World" - one of the most popular marine mammal parks of the USA. You can even stay at one of the Walt Disney World's hotels - rates are a bit higher than that in Orlando (the resort is located 20 miles from the city), but each hotel is a true sight: imagine you live in a Polynesian hut, or in a Wild-Western style hotel, or even a music-themed hotel called Disney%s All Star Music.

The only drawback is that there are no natural reservoirs close by, and it takes 1,5 hours to reach the ocean by car. But there is another attraction - Disney's Vero Beach Resort - located on Atlantic coast.

Both children and grown-ups will like Universal Studios Florida where one can «jump into the action of the movies», and entertain oneself at one of its attractions like «Terminator 2:3-D», «The Simpsons Ride», «Revenge of the Mummy», «Animal Actors On» and many others.

These are just a few of Orlando's attractions and parks. The city of course has numerous galleries, museums and scientific centres. But that's the subject for another story.
